- Item Description
We are pleased to present this antique Capstan style Inkwell for your consideration. It is made of Pewter and has holes for 6 pens. The original Ceramic Ink Cup is included. The Inkwell is an older piece and dates to around 1890.
We acquired this piece some years ago in Botany Bay, Australia, which is a key shipping hub for the continent. The Capstan style Inkwell is designed for use on a ship. The large base (and weight of the Pewter) keeps it from tipping over during heavy seas.
The Inkwell is 3 inches high and 9 inches in diameter. The center section is 4-1/2 inches in diameter. Total weight of the Inkwell (base plus cup) is 2 pounds 4 ounces. There are no markings on the base or Ink Cup.
The Ink Cup has crazing lines visible under its glaze. The glaze is worn through at the bottom, both on the inside and on the outside, showing a creamy white porcelain in those areas. The remaining areas of glaze are shiny, with the underlying porcelain varying in shade from medium to light gray, with some blue shades showing as well. There are no chips or cracks, and we rate the Ink Cup as being in very good condition overall.
The Pewter Base has some bumps and bends to its metal, but all are slight. The surface of the Pewter shows light wear with surface scratches, especially on the underside. Overall condition of the Pewter base is very good (see pictures).
This is a fantastic example of an antique Capstan style Inkwell with original Ink Cup. It would make a wonderful addition to any collection!
