We have here another wonderful find in this very Special Antique Black Lacquer Tilt Top Table.
It is a fairly low table - standing about 23 inches tall and having a top surface diameter of about 40 3/4 inches.
This Exquisite Black Lacquer Table features a magnificent Hand-Painted Floral Design surrounded by all sorts of golden scroll designs, exquisitely colored flowers, Beautiful Birds, Proud Peacocks and Abalone/Mother of Pearl Inlaid borders and trims. We see brilliant bursts of a wide range of colors - Brilliant Reds, Greens and Yellows as well as softer Peach and Vivid Orange tones.
The shape too is quite a conversation piece on its own merits. We are not absolutely certain of its country of origin, but it does seem very much to have a certain Italian Flair to it - possibly French?
We can see Pine Wood from a bit of rub-off on the back of the top surface - although we have been told by several knowledgeable collectors that it closely resembles the wonderful papier maché articles made by Jennens & Bettridge in the early to mid 1800's.
What a versatile table it is!
The tilt-top feature allows not only for easy moving from one area to another, but also is the perfect conversation piece for the smaller space as well as a larger area - when placed against a wall with the top tilted downward.
The top can easily be taken off and put back again. It connects to the lovely base with the steel pin which we have photographed for your inspection. There is also a small lever which - when pushed into place - locks the top surface in horizontal position when the tilt feature is not desired.
What a beautiful sense of balance we see in the design of this table!
The legs' curves, the center pedestal and the feet themselves are all finely shaped and exquisitely detailed with their own golden scrolls and Mother-of-Pearl inlay work.
Of course there is minor age-related surface wear, but remarkably, nothing really at all major. This table was obviously lovingly used and well-cared for over its lifetime.
Just give it a gentle cleaning - and display with pride!
