English WIDDICOMBE FAIR Sadler CROWN DEVON FIELDINGS Mugs
Here we are offering two beautiful ceramic tankards. One from Crown Devon Fieldings, and the other from Sadler in Staffordsire, England.
The Widdicombe Fair tankard stands 6 inches tall with a base diameter of 4-5/8 inches tapering to 3-7/8 inches at the top. Weighing 21 ounces, the mug has the Crown Devon Fieldings, Made in England mark on the bottom followed by R N 804874 and the artists mark. There is another mark of No 802897 inscribed along the base underneath the Chorus of the song.
One side of the mug under the title WIDDICOMBE FAIR is a raised, colorful and comical scene depicting fairgoers riding on the back of a grey mare. On the other side all eight verses of the traditional song are listed above the words to the Chorus.
Overall, the mug is in very good condition with the expected amount of crazing for a piece this old. There is a very small chip underneath the glaze on the underside of the top of the handle.
The Sadler Mug which stands 5-1/2" tall and weighs 16 ounces depicts a fox hunting scene with two hunters on horseback running alongside five hounds. Centered on the other side of the mug is a picture of the fox hunters tools of the trade. With a 3-3/4" base tapering to 3-1/8" at the top, gold trim accents the lines around the base, handle and around the brim. On the bottom is The Sadler, Made in Staffordshire, England mark along with the artists mark.
This mug is also in very good condition overall, however there is also the expected amount of crazing which can occur in a piece this old.
