- Item Description
We are pleased to offer this antique French Mantel Clock for your consideration. It is made from Marble in several colors including Pale Yellow, Brown, Black, and Tan, with the pieces having intricate veins and swirls, combined in an exceptional Art Deco design. The Clock is a Garniture, with two smaller decorative side pieces complementing the Clock which sits in the center. Further visual appeal is provided by two metal tusked Elephants mounted on each side of the Clock. Truly a stunning piece!
The Clock has an 8-Day movement signed by Fritz Marti. It was a Medal Winner at the 1889 World's Fair (Exposition) held in Paris, France, and has an engraved circular label on the movement attesting to this (see pictures for close-up). The face of the Clock is marked A La Gerbe Dor A Fouciier and Cherbourg France.
The Clock is 10 inches high, 29 inches wide (including side pieces), and 4-1/2 inches deep. The width of the center piece is 20 inches with each side piece measuring 4-1/2 inches wide. Combined weight of the three pieces is 28-1/2 pounds. The Clock movement has an engraved number 1111 which we believe is the serial number. The Pendulum is also stamped with the same number. A key is included, but it is not original to the Clock.
The Marble on the Clock and side pieces have some chips and edge wear which are not especially noticeable unless looking at the pieces closely. One Tusk on the Elephant on the right side is partially broken off. The Trunk on the Elephant on the left side has a fracture on its underside but it remains solidly attached. The Marble on one of the side pieces is detached from its base, but just needs to be glued back in place. The lower pin for the hinged door holding the glass over the Clock face is missing. We rate the overall physical condition as good to very good.
The Clock was wound and the Pendulum installed. Sometimes it would run for extended periods while other times it would stop after a few minutes. We've since oiled the Pivots on the back of the movement and have had it free running without the Pendulum for many days at a time. You may find it needs additional oiling (especially at the less accessible lubrication points at the front of the movement) and/or cleaning, and the Clock is sold in as-is condition. The movement however looks clean and is in very good physical condition, as can be seen in our pictures.
This is a fabulous antique French Garniture with wonderful visual features and superb Art Deco styling. It would make a fantastic addition to any antique Clock collection!
