Up for your consideration are two (2) vintage Bakelite Mantel Clocks. One is a Smiths Enfield (the larger of the two) that is in good working order. The other is a Ferranti that is not working, and is being included for parts. Both Clocks were manufactured in Great Britain.
The Smiths Enfield Clock is a wind-up Pendulum unit that Chimes once on the half hour, plus Chimes the number of hours at the top of each hour. It measures 7-1/4 inches high, 8-1/2 inches wide, and 4-1/2 inches deep. We wound it up and let it run over night, finding it running about 2 minutes slow after 24 hours. The Pendulum can easily be adjusted to speed up, or slow down, the Clock. The operation of the Chimes was flawless with proper performance on the hour and half hour. The Clock is supplied with a Key for winding, but it is not the original.
The Clock has a few minor issues. The hour hand is out of position (pointing to the half hour when at the top of the hour). The access door on the back of the cabinet is slightly out of position and doesn't fit into its frame the way it should. The metal trim on the front shows some minor tarnish and a medium patina. The Clock is otherwise in very good condition with a clean interior and nice looking Clock face (see pictures above).
The Ferranti Clock is included as a bonus with this auction, and is supplied only for parts. It measures 6 inches high by 7 inches wide by 3-1/8 inches deep. It is marked on the back of its cabinet that it uses 200-250 Volts AC at 50 cycles (electric service that would be found in Great Britain), but there is no power cord. The Bakelite cabinet has a crack on the front, but is in pretty decent shape overall. The Clock is missing a hand, and the Clock face has Brown spots on the front. There is no glass or trim over the Clock face. It is untested, and supplied as-is.
Combined weight of the two Clocks is about 6-1/2 pounds.
The Smiths Enfield Clock is a fantastic vintage Bakelite Clock in nice operating condition. It would make a fabulous Holiday Gift for any Clock enthusiast, or be a wonderful addition to any Mantel Clock collection!
