- Item Description
We have here another wonderful find in this CHINESE POTTERY item. It is of three old WISE MEN or GODS if you prefer, sitting upon a TORTOISE. The elongated ear lobes on the men along with the tortoise, signify longevity.
This piece is so unique having all 4 of these elements together. One of the WISE MEN appears to be reading from a book while another is perhaps pondering the words spoken and the third looks as if to be blessing them. All the while, it appears the TORTOISE doesn't mind a bit!
The men are dressed in a variety of attire and ways; from a belted yellow KIMONO, to a burnt orange open ROBE, to a black WRAP over one shoulder and one arm. The TORTOISE is black with gold accents along his shell.
We do not see marking on this piece, but are told from the prior owner that it is an old piece, one acquired from travels through ASIA. It comes to us in excellent condition, though we see that the tip of the tortoise's tail appears to be missing, but it is glazed, so maybe this is how the artist intended it to be. Other than that, no chips, cracks or repairs that we can identify.
This is one not to pass up as it would make a great addition to any collection or a thoughtful gift and who knows when another will be available again.
