Just in time for the Holiday Gift Season, we are pleased to offer the vintage book The Fairyland of Living Things which is signed by its author Richard Kearton. From the preface:
In this little book I have tried by word and picture to give children a peep into the wonderful fairy-land of the living things of the countryside.
It has been my endeavour throughout its pages to interest them in the habits, instincts and characters of the wild creatures that are to be met with every day in field, wood and hedge-row.
My object has been to awaken the juvenile mind to the wonders and beauties of Nature rather than to burden it by recounting dry facts.
The questions I am constantly being asked by children of all ages and classes to whom I lecture have taught me that by dealing with the romantic and wonderful things in the lives and habits of birds, beasts and insects, young minds are aroused and stimulated into observing, enquiring and thinking for themselves.
The pictures in the work represent things as my brother and I have seen them in nearly every part of the British Isles, and, as I am a great believer in teaching through the eye, they have been liberally sprinkled up and down the pages of the book.
The Book contains an extensive discussion of Birds, British Mammals, British Snakes, Lizards, and Amphibians, Plants, and Insects and contains approximately 100 black and white photographs.
The Book is hardbound and contains 182 pages. The last date shown on the copyright page is 1915. The author's autograph on the endpage is dated June, 1925, and there is an owner's signature dated May, 1925 with the notation "With love from Mother & Daddy". It was published by Cassell & Co., in England.
The covers show a bit of soil with corner bumps and edge wear, especially at the top and bottom of the spine. Light foxing is noted on the endpages. The binding is cracked but interior pages are firmly attached. Inside pages are bright and unmarked. The overall condition of the Book is very good (see pictures above).
This is a delightful vintage Book that would appeal to younger readers as well as adults. It would make a fantastic Holiday Gift, or be a wonderful addition to any collection!
