- Item Description
We are pleased to present this 1882 edition of the Book Alfonso Petrucci for your consideration. It was written by Robert Charles Jenkins, M.A. (1815-1896). It has a bookplate on the inside of the front cover which identifies it as part of the Plumptre collection. Plumptre is Edward Hayes Plumptre (1821-1891) who was Dean at the Wells Theological College from 1881 to 1891, until his death. Many of his personal books were donated to the college after his death, thus the Ex Dono (Donated) bookplate at the front of this book.
The Book was published in 1882 in London by Kegan Paul, Trench & Co. Hardcover, it measures 7 inches by 4-7/8 inches and is about 3/8 inch thick, containing 82 pages (plus 32 catalog pages at the end listing other books available from the same publisher). It weighs 6.6 ounces. No edition is stated and we believe this is a First Edition - the bound catalog pages at the end are dated 12.81.
The covers show some scuffing and light soil, but it is exaggerated in our pictures by the flash on the camera. Cover wear is light, with slight bumps to corners. The cover edges at the top and the bottom of the spine show more wear. A couple of small pencil markings were seen on end pages. Light foxing is seen on end pages, lessening towards the middle of the book. Page edges are somewhat ragged and have a dusty appearance on the top edge. There is some slight separation of the black end paper inside the front cover at the spine (look to the right of the bookplate), but the binding is solid and in good condition. Interior pages show minimal darkening from age with little wear. We rate the overall condition of the book as very good (see pictures).
This is an excellent copy of an enduring work by a noted author. It would make a wonderful addition to any collection!
Note: We have other books listed that were part of the Wells College Plumptre collection.
