- Item Description
We are pleased to offer this antique Chamber's Encyclopedia for your consideration. It is the ten (10) volume New Edition with volumes carrying dates from 1888 to 1892 (work was started on the New Edition in 1888 and completed in 1892). The set was originally owned by Hannah W. Goodbody in Ireland, and it was published by William & Robert Chambers, Limited, in England. Weighing approximately 45 pounds, the set features over 50 color Maps and Plates, including many oversize fold-out pages.
The covers on the Encyclopedias show moderate to heavy wear with edge wear at the top and bottom of the spine being typical. Corner bumps and discolored areas on the covers are also common. Volume IX is in the worst condition with areas of the cover missing or loose along the spine. On the inside, breaks in the paper that connect the covers to the endpages are frequently found.
Despite the issues with the covers, the inside pages look good. Slight browning can be seen around the edges, but the pages are typically clean, crisp, and in very good condition. The fold-out pages were also in exceptional shape, showing little to no wear. We rate the cover condition on this set as fair, with interior pages as very good (see pictures).
This is a nice antique Encyclopedia with great interior pages, maps, and plates. The set would make a wonderful addition to any Book collection!
