We have here another wonderful find in this Handsome old English Leather Case.
It measures about 13 1/2 inches by about 18 inches and is approximately 6 1/2 inches deep.
We believe that this case was originally meant to be used perhaps as a Vanity or some sort of Tool or other Instrument case. It's interior is fitted out with various sections and compartments both soft fabric as well as more firm ones. Its Lid is also fitted with several 'loops' meant to hold some types of smaller or flatter items.
The original lining fabrication is a lovely quality faille done in a dark Navy Blue. The lining is quite intact although the soft sections' elastic seems to have lost their stretch ability. We have not detected any major rips or tears, although we do see dis-colorated areas.
The Excellent high-quality Black Leather is also in remarkably good condition with the always expected wear to corners and perimeter edges. Even its Bottom 'Feet' are still as secure as can be.
The case itself, although showing surface wear which can be noted in the photographs which we have provided for your inspection, is in remarkably fine sturdy condition and should continue to give many more years of good use to its new owner. The Original Leather Handle is still in very strong good condition with only a bit of surface wear to the top grain.
Its Fine Old English Key Locks work very well as do its Hasps (top latches) which are still nice and 'spring-y'. We do Not have the Key for these Locks. The Initials M.D.M. are embossed directly into the center of the lid. Many fine Shoe and Luggage Repair Establishments can adhere a nice 'patch' of closely matching leather over these initials. They can also place your own initials there. This is a very inexpensive adaptation.
The uses for which this case can be employed are endless - and - with appropriate adaptations - are only limited by the boundaries of one's imagination. We certainly can see it used as a Briefcase, a Picnic Hamper, a Vanity Case, a Gentleman's Toilette Case, perhaps a Tool or other Implement Case where one needs quality and strength and not necessarily a pristine exterior.
Just give it a gentle cleaning, perhaps a bit of appropriate polish and it will soon be ready to go to work for you.
