- Item Description
We are pleased to offer this original George V Sword for your consideration. It was manufactured during the reign of King George V which dates it to the 1910 to 1936 period.
The Sword is 38-1/2 inches in total length with a blade measuring 32-1/4 inches in length. It weighs 2 pounds. The Blade is elaborately decorated and etched on both sides with symbols including a Crown, Royal Cipher (GvR), Star of David; and the manufacturer's identification which reads:
J.R. GAUNT & SON
LIMITED
LATE
EDWARD-THURKLE
LONDON
&
BIRMINGHAM
The Grip is the fish skin wrapped style and it shows wear with the underlying wood visible at the extreme ends. The Grip has seven wires holding it in place, and they are tight except for a few outer strands which are slightly loose towards the center of the Grip. The Hilt shows light (but old) surface rust, especially on its inside surface.
The Blade does not appear to have ever been sharpened as the cutting edge is broad all the way down to the point. Patches of light surface rust are found on the Blade, obscuring some of the etched decorations. There is a shallow nick on the cutting edge located 5-1/16 inch from the point. The Sword is sold as-is, but is in good overall condition (see pictures). We can supply additional pictures on request. A Scabbard is not provided.
This is a nice example of a George V Sword. It would make a wonderful addition to any collection!
